Background of the Study
The energy sector plays a pivotal role in global economic development but is also a major contributor to environmental degradation. The shift toward renewable energy sources, driven by climate change concerns, has necessitated the adoption of sustainability audits to ensure that energy firms adhere to sustainable practices and reduce their carbon footprints (Okafor & Oladipo, 2023).
In Nigeria, the renewable energy sector has grown significantly as the country seeks to diversify its energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Sustainability audits assess the environmental, social, and economic impacts of these firms, ensuring they operate in line with global sustainability goals. However, the adoption of sustainability audits remains inconsistent due to regulatory gaps, financial constraints, and limited expertise. This study investigates the role of sustainability audits in promoting sustainable practices among renewable energy firms in Nigeria.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growth of renewable energy in Nigeria, challenges such as inefficient resource utilization, inadequate environmental safeguards, and poor social accountability persist. Sustainability audits offer a framework for addressing these issues, but their adoption is hindered by factors such as weak regulatory enforcement, high costs, and lack of awareness.
While renewable energy firms in Nigeria are expected to lead the transition to sustainability, their practices often fall short of global standards. This research seeks to evaluate the role of sustainability audits in addressing these gaps and promoting sustainable practices in the sector.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the adoption of sustainability audits among renewable energy firms in Nigeria.

  2. To evaluate the impact of sustainability audits on the environmental and social performance of renewable energy firms.

  3. To identify challenges faced by renewable energy firms in implementing sustainability audits.

Research Questions

  1. How are sustainability audits adopted among renewable energy firms in Nigeria?

  2. What is the impact of sustainability audits on the environmental and social performance of renewable energy firms?

  3. What challenges do renewable energy firms face in implementing sustainability audits?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H₀: Sustainability audits are not widely adopted among renewable energy firms in Nigeria.

  2. H₀: Sustainability audits do not significantly impact the environmental and social performance of renewable energy firms.

  3. H₀: Renewable energy firms do not face significant challenges in implementing sustainability audits.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on renewable energy firms in Nigeria and their sustainability audit practices from 2023 to 2025. It examines the role of these audits in promoting sustainable practices and the challenges encountered in their implementation. Limitations include restricted access to proprietary sustainability reports and potential biases in responses from firm representatives.

Definitions of Terms

  • Sustainability Audits: Evaluations of an organization’s environmental, social, and economic performance to ensure adherence to sustainability standards.

  • Renewable Energy Firms: Companies involved in the production and distribution of energy from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydro.

  • Sustainable Practices: Actions that meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
